updated version, post proper research: it was just very beautiful fiction :( but the gravestone is real, and I will take this as an instructional lesson in story telling tactics (statement via google translate)I came across a delightful & tragic WWI gays thread on Twitter, one of those "I found a cool thing, and then I dug for the story behind it." My absolute favorite genre! I haven't fact checked it properly (honestly, I'm not even sure how I would), but regardless I wept.

The reason you should read it is because it is the (a?) story behind this Romanian gravestone, and features letters, mysterious paintings, and a quest through a small Romanian town.
